Alternate Language Study Option (ALSO) is a 2-credit self-guided language course in which students work independently and with native-speaking peers to learn a language not taught by 51±¾É« faculty. It is designed for highly motivated and disciplined students interested in language learning. Popular ALSO languages include Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Hindi, and Korean. Other languages may also be available pending student interest and native-speaking tutor availability. ALSO is a great way to explore a less commonly taught language or prepare for off-campus study.
Students enrolled in the course attend an orientation at the beginning of the semester to learn about the structure of the program, as well as tools and strategies for independent learning. During the semester, students:
- follow the self-study guide
- attend 2–3 communicative sessions per week with a trained native-speaking peer tutor
- complete regular assignments and self-assessments
At the end of the course, students’ interpersonal speaking skills are formally assessed.
Enrollment prerequisites:
- second-year standing
- foreign language learning experience (3 years in high school or 1 year at 51±¾É«) or linguistics coursework
- cumulative GPA of 2.75
- director’s permission
